Updated: Nov 15, 2022

Within every industry, you will find more than one provider for that product or service, creating many choices for potential clients. Establishing your niche within your field helps position yourself in the market and enables you to stand out from your competitors.

This post focuses on your products and services and how these can guide you to your niche. Your niche is devised from your ideal clients or the people you like to work with and your actual products or services. These two are interlinked. To understand more about your ideal clients, please check out our other article, Identifying Your Ideal Client.

If you are starting out and feel you are not ready to narrow down your experience yet, niching down within your market might not be the right thing for you to do now. Before deciding to niche, we recommend that you do your market research to ensure enough potential clients are willing to purchase from you.

Constructing that perfect niche is created by looking at what you love, what you are brilliant at and meeting your ideal client's needs. Otherwise, your ideal clients won't be interested in hiring you!

For example, if you are a beautician looking to set up on your own. You can offer a wide range of treatments from waxing, massages, nails, eyebrows, tinting, and much more. However, you love doing nails and eyebrows. Your clients and previous employer say you are excellent at doing HD eyebrows and acrylic nails. These areas would be a great niche place. But you are worried that narrowing your services would result in you missing out on potential clients. Having a niche will help you stand out from the rest of the market, and it means you can target your ideal audience. Being general within your market makes it harder for potential clients to choose you over all your competitors. If you have a good reputation, you will still attract a broader range of people who want to work with you anyway.
